YAO MING CHIEN EMBROIDERIES

See the first showing of a collection of giant hand-embroidered wall hangings by a locally living Taiwanease refugee. Yao Ming Chein is deaf from birth, but after arriving in the UK in 1993, he learnt English Sign Language, allowing him to communicate with others. An America friend initially introduced him to embroidery, and several years later his passion was reignited. Yao, working from pictures by a window with plenty of natural light; painstakingly transfers his image to canvas, before colouring it in entirely with hand stitches and sometimes tiny beads. One of his most elaborate embroideries – Heavenly Kiss – took four dedicated months, and a magnifying glass, to complete!
